چکیده

The reduction of the energy gap due to Landau level mixing, characterized by the dimensionless parameter λ = (e/ǫl0)/h̄ωc, has been calculated by variational Monte Carlo for the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling fractions ν = 1/3 and 1/5 using a modified version of Jain’s composite fermion wave functions. These wave functions exploit the Landau level mixing already present in composite fermion wave functions by introducing a partial Landau level projection operator. Results for the energy gaps are consistent with experimental observations in n-type GaAs, but we conclude that Landau level mixing alone cannot account for the significantly smaller energy gaps observed in p-type systems. 73.40.Hm, 73.20.Dx

A ug 1 99 6 Study of composite fermions : Beyond few particle systems

We construct a new representation of composite fermion wave functions in the lowest Landau level which enables Monte Carlo computations at arbitrary filling factors for a fairly large number of composite fermions, thus clearing the way toward a more detailed quantitative investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect. As an illustrative application, thermodynamic estimates for the transpor...

Structures for interacting composite fermions: Stripes, bubbles, and fractional quantum Hall effect

Much of the present day qualitative phenomenology of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be understood by neglecting the interactions between composite fermions altogether. For example, the fractional quantum Hall effect at n5n/(2pn61) corresponds to filled composite-fermion Landau levels, and the compressible state at n51/2p to the Fermi sea of composite fermions. Away from these filling fa...

Robust fractional quantum Hall effect in the N=2 Landau level in bilayer graphene

The fractional quantum Hall effect is a canonical example of electron-electron interactions producing new ground states in many-body systems. Most fractional quantum Hall studies have focussed on the lowest Landau level, whose fractional states are successfully explained by the composite fermion model. In the widely studied GaAs-based system, the composite fermion picture is thought to become u...

Skyrmions in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

It is verified that, at small Zeeman energies, the charged excitations in the vicinity of 1/3 filled Landau level are skyrmions of composite fermions, analogous to the skyrmions of electrons near filling factor unity. These are found to be relevant, however, only at very low magnetic fields. PACS numbers: 73.40.Hm Typeset using REVTEX 0Accepted for publication in Solid State Communications (199...
